is a classical South Indian painting style, which was inaugurated from the town of Thanjavur. The art form draws its resources from 1600 AD. The Nayakas of Thanjavur encouraged art that depicted Hindu gods and temple stories. It is distinguished by its rich gold work.
Thanjavur paintings use vibrant colors, gold foils, glass beads and sometimes stones. Subjects are Hindu gods, goddesses and saints. Scenes from Hindu Puranas were illustrated with a main central figure surrounded by supporting characters.
Tanjore Art, also known as Thanjavur Painting, is one of South India’s most celebrated classical art forms. Originating from the historic city of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, this traditional painting style is renowned for its rich colors, intricate detailing, and the use of real 22-carat gold foil that gives each artwork a divine, glowing effect. Rooted in the 16th century during the Chola and Nayak periods, Tanjore paintings primarily depict Hindu gods, goddesses, and mythological scenes. Each piece is crafted with exceptional precision using natural pigments, hand-carved wooden boards, and embellished with stones, gems, and gold work.
